12 years ago, I was in 3rd grade. The previous nights I was just playing in the school yard with my best friends, and their father. Little did I know it would be the last time I saw this man. My brother came to pick me up from school at lunchtime. As a third grader, I didnt care why I was leaving, but just getting out early made my day. When we got home I saw the images on the TV screen. The worst part is those arent the terrible images that stick in my head. The worst image from that day was watching my best friend’s mother, just waiting on her stoop, and waiting, and waiting. Staring at the street he always came home on, wondering what was taking him so long.
Steve Mercado was a fire fighter for the FDNY. But that was his second job. He was a fantastic father of two, along with being a second father for me amd my two younger siblings. He is the bravest man i have ever known and his sons remain my two best friends. I cant belive 12 years have gone by so fast. The lessons you taught me when I was younger are still with me today. And I value them more than anything. I know your shining face is watching down on your two bright sons who do the same as I do. Thank you for sacrafice Steve. Rest In Peace.
